Some of the more effective social networks get their start in the physical world. Sermo is a good example. Sermo is an online community primarily composed of physicians sharing experiences and information. In some ways it replicates the doctors’ lounge in a hospital, without the geographical boundaries. Consider the implications of reaching more physicians to discuss ideas — even if they are seemingly unique to your hospital, perhaps there are similar circumstances in other locations that apply. This is one of the benefits of social networks.
Dr. Michael Tomblyn of the University of Minnesota comments on this new phenomenon in this NewComm Conversations podcast with Society for New Communications Research Senior Fellow Albert Maruggi.
